A source close to the "Daughters" crooner told U.K.'s Daily Mirror that he and the former Friends actress have recently called it quits.
According to the New York Daily News, word has it that Aniston has already moved on. The Mirror also says that Mayer initiated the split.
"There's been a bit of tension for some time," the source said."They initially opted for a break, hoping a trial split might make them stronger. Sadly it doesn't seem to have worked. John took the decision to end things as he felt he just wasn't ready for the level of commitment that Jennifer deserved.
"Contrary to reports, Jen didn't want to have kids or marry this year, but she did want to set a timetable for their future together. She also wanted him to assure her he would cut down his tours in the future when they did eventually have children.
"Initially, Jennifer was furious when he told her of his decision but now she's simply sad-not to mention a little heartbroken."
It's hard to say if a reunion is completely out of the picture. According to People, a friend of Mayer, 30, said that reconciliation with Aniston, 39, is not out of the question. "He never ends things with a clean slate. He likes to dwell on these relationships and sort everything out before saying goodbye for good."
The source, however, told the Mirror that whilst the ex-duo will remain on good terms, "unless John has a dramatic change of heart, it's unlikely they'll rekindle their romance."
Reps from both parties declined to comment.
The two kicked off the courtship April of this year. Mayer's dating past includes big name stars such as Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Love Hewitt. Aniston, on the other hand, is not so lucky with romance since her divorce with Brad Pitt four years ago.
Aniston has just finished her movie recently, ironically titled He's Just Not That Into You.
